Choose the path that fits you. Start with the essentials for a new profile, or use the review checklist to strengthen an existing profile.
Build your LinkedIn profile
- Add a professional photo. Use a simple background, friendly expression, and clothing appropriate for your field.
- Write a clear headline. Name your target role, strongest skills, or the value you can offer—not only your current job title.
- Create an About section. Briefly explain who you are, your experience and skills, and the type of opportunity you are pursuing.
- Complete the essentials. Add experience, education, certifications, volunteer work, projects, location, and relevant skills.
- Begin your network. Connect with people you know and personalize invitations when contacting someone new.
Review and improve it
- Update your headline and About section for the work you want now.
- Add descriptions and accomplishments to recent positions rather than listing titles alone.
- Compare job postings and add relevant skills and keywords you can honestly support.
- Confirm that your location, education, certifications, contact details, and profile photo are current.
- Customize your profile URL, proofread every section, and review your visibility and privacy settings.
- Stay active by following employers, engaging thoughtfully, and building genuine professional connections.
Remember: Your LinkedIn profile should complement your résumé, not simply repeat it. Use the extra space to show projects, accomplishments, certifications, volunteer experience, and professional interests.
